When it comes to local preservation groups, Historic Landmarks of Fountain County (HLFC) stands out—a small but mighty and tireless group dedicated to preserving historic places
The group’s list of accomplishments rivals that of larger organizations: nominating multiple districts to the National Register, owning and managing several historic properties, making grants for streetscape and community improvement projects, even publishing a book, Architectural Styles of Fountain County, Indiana: Significant 19th & 20th Century Houses.
HLFC recently turned its attention to the historic Attica Armory. The group is working with the Attica Consolidated School System to determine how the Art Moderne-style armory—scheduled to be closed—could serve as a community center and recreational facility. A grant from Historic Landmarks helped fund a rehabilitation and reuse study for the building.
To raise funds for its ambitious list of projects, HLFC sponsors an annual spring gala and a summer gardens tour. This year’s gala on April 19 features dinner, dancing, awards, and a silent auction. For more information about Historic Landmarks of Fountain County, visit www.hlfcindiana.org.
